hello. i'm j.c. hayward. the world is remembering the film legend elizabeth taylor across the globe. she was a woman who captivated audiences for more than 50 years. her marriages, her films and

her unparalleled beauty were trademarks. they won her both praise and lots of tabloid headlines. manuel gallegus takes a look at her legendary life. >> most americans first laid eyes on elizabeth rose mond taylor in american velvet. the public would be fascinated by her marriages and scandalous affairs. her countless illnesses, surgeries, seesawing appearance and her remarkable ability to triumph through it all. after a string of films as a teenager in the '50s, critics finally recognized her for her acting as well as her vile et- eyed beauty. she had been divorced twice by 1957. devastated by the death of her third husband in a plane crash, taylor found comfort in his best friend, eddie fisher. soon, the public despised taylor for break up the marriage of fisher and sweetheart carrie reynolds. he became husband number four.

it was the biggest hollywood scandal of the decade. less than three years later, the public was back on her side after she almost died of pneumonia. sympathy from her emergency tracheotomy helped her win an academy award for butterfield 8. >> in 1963, taylor became the highest paid actress in film history receiving $1 million for cleopatra. >> i will not have love as my master. >> still married to fisher, she began a stormy love affair with her co-star, husband five and six, richard burton. the couple would make nine films together with who's afraid of virginia wolf earning her second oscar. theirs was a larger than life romance right down to the 69 half of a carat diamond burton bought for her. they divorced in 1976. in '72, she revealed she had congestive heart failure. still, she never completely shied away from the public eye. when asked what she considered her biggest accomplishment,

elizabeth taylor replied, i survived. manuel guy augustous, cbs news, hollywood. in addition to her children, elizabeth taylor is survived by ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. well, it is calm right now outside. howard has been tracking the threat of some strong storms for this afternoon. he has details. >> j.c., we're concerned late this afternoon, even after dark for some weather to be moving in that could be a problem. moderate to severe weather is west of us. west of the mountains here. western west virginia. there could be some isolated tornadoes there. that slight risk area extends across the region. across virginia and maryland. now, i'm thinking the northeastern part of this mainly in maryland where it has been cooler. across parts of virginia, the shenandoah valley, northern virginia, fredericksburg, you have to worry more so than we do here. we've been watching the showers really pass this morning. it has been fairly quiet. we have showers to our north and west. a couple of storms near charleston, west virginia. locally, live doppler 9000 hd,

some lighter rain showers winchester up 81 at hagerstown out toward thurmont approaching frederick right now. this is not what i'm concerned about. i'm concerned as we look at the future cast as we go through the afternoon. while we'll have spotty showers, there will be stuff that arrives later on. maybe not until 8:00 and maybe ahead of this but you'll see 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 how the storms roll through. some could be packing gusty winds and some hail. behind this, j.c., it is going to get even colder, looks like a chilly finish to the week. i'll have those details in a few minutes. thank you, howard. we have breaking news from woodbridge, virginia. investigators are combing through a trash dumpster where human remains were found. our brittany morehouse is on the scene with break details. brittany, what can you tell us? >> reporter: j.c., we know a medical examiner is on the way to confirm whether this is a dead body. we're dealing with a dumpster beyond the yellow fire truck here. you can't see from where i'm standing but it is near the

skyview apartments. this is a large, sprawling complex just off the intersection of mt. pleasant drive at jefferson davis highway here in woodbridge. we know around 9:50, firefighters were called to respond to a dumpster fire. they saw what appeared to be human remains and police were called on the scene. right now, again, we're waiting for the medical examiner to come. in the meantime, we have touched base with the property manager and they say that they can't even tell us how many people live in this apartment complex. it is that large. and they are going to get back back to us with a statement. >> we'll be following the story. we'll have the latest on our web site at wusa9.com. >> now, we'll turn our attention to libya. coalition warplanes bombed targets inside the country for a fourth night. and nato is a step closer to taking the lead in a no-fly zone. still, libya's leader vowing not to give up. joel brown has the latest now from the state department. >> antiaircraft fire lit up the sky over tripoli for the fourth

night in a row. coalition warplanes continue to pound libya but a defiant moammar gadhafi insists he's not going anywhere. in his first appearance since the assault began, gadhafi called his enemies "crazed fascists who will go down in the dust bin of history." coalition forces say the air strikes to enforce the u.n. no- fly zone are hitting their mark. this area of tripoli's naval base is virtually destroyed. but forces loyal to gadhafi are ratcheting up their assault on the ground. overnight, they reportedly used tanks and snipers to try to take back misrata, the last major city in western libya that is still in rebel hands. witnesses there say attacks this week have left dozens dead. >> the u.s. has commanded the international assault so far but hopes to hand off control in the next few days. >> we'll continue to support the efforts to protect the

libyan people. but we will not be in the lead. >> diplomats say leaders are getting closer to an agreement that would put nato in charge of running the no-fly zone. the alliance has sent warships to the waters off the libyan coast joining the u.s. vessels on patrol there. joel brown, cbs news, the state department. if coalition forces have to maintain a no-fly zone over libya for more than a couple of months, experts say it could cost more than $1 billion. police in jerusalem are calling an explosion there a bus stop an act of terrorism. the bomb killed one woman and injured more than 20 others. israeli authorities are blaming palestinian militants for this blast. this comes amid-rising tensions between israel and the hamas militant group which has killed hundreds of israelis and suicide bombs and other attacks in recent years. there are new concerns this afternoon in the wake of the

japan disaster. there is black smoke coming from one of the damage reactors and workers have been pulled back also. radioactive iodine found in tap water in tokyo is twice the recommended amount for infants. although harmful to children, however, the water does not pose an immediate health risk for adults. new estimates now put the cleanup cost from the quake and the tsunami at more than $300 billion. in olney, maryland, investigators are awaiting ballistic tests in order to determine if two murders are connected. the murders happened just miles from one another in four days. but so far, there has been no official link between these two murders. the test results could change that. our surae chinn has more information. >> reporter: two unsolved murders within days of each other in olney had residents very concerned. >> it is shocking and it is strange and it is scary.

>> the investigation has turned to the possibility that the two crimes might be linked. 41-year-old punyasara gedara gunned down in a drive-by shooting in the heart of olney on north high street. >> i can't believe it because he doesn't go anywhere without us. just only he's going to work. >> reporter: in fact, he was walking home from this subway where he worked when he was killed on monday. a couple of miles away, on olney mill road, 81-year-old na zeier ahmed was shot to death inside his home on friday. just a block away from belmont elementary school. >> i think somebody really had it in for him. i don't know who. he was a nice gentleman. >> any connection between the sri lankan born man who just bon the lottery green card to live in the u.s. and the man who never missed prayer service remains to be seen. police say there may have been a possible siting of a suspect vehicle. an older model beige toyota

camry. hoping that may jog someone's memory. and generate tips. surae chinn, 9news now. there was no apparent evidence of a robbery in either case and no motive has been established. well, she vanished without a trace several days ago. but today, 33-year-old emily hershenson is back with her family. overnight, the d.c. mother was found near capitol hill where she once worked as a press secretary. she had not been seen after she left her adams morgan home on monday morning. her husband says she was a bit disoriented but she has no physical injuries. next time you pony up to a maryland bar, you might have to pay a little bit more because today, lawmakers in annapolis are debating putting a tax on alcohol. and if approved, the tax would climb from the current 6% to 9%. in the next three years. the head of the state senate predicts that his chamber will pass this bill. well, forget about paying

taxes or tuition. seven local high school students are greeted by the george washington university prize patrol this morning and they handed out full scholarships. the scholarships include tuition, fees, room, board and books! the scholarship for going to d.c. residents who graduate from high schools in the district. to date, 124 students in the nation's capital have received this honor. congratulations to them! d.c. residents weigh in on the job that's being done by mayor vincent gray. plus... >> a judge close the book on google's plan to create a digital online library.

. a day after a fire rips through the corcoran gallery of art, the museum is reopening. damage was isolated to one room and no art pieces were affected. d.c. mayor vincent gray is not the most popular politician in the city right now. that's according to a new survey from claris research group. 31% of d.c. residents surveyed this week approve of the job that mr. gray is doing. 40% disapprove. 29% had no opinion. the same survey finds that 40% of d.c. residents approve of the way that mayor gray keeps in touch with average citizens.

d.c. council member harry thomas jr. is under investigation this afternoon. the city campaign finance office is looking into allegations that the ward five councilman did not fully disclose some of the financial dealings that he had with organizations that he ran. the concerns were raised by the district's republican committee. thomas says he welcomes the probe but he says it will clear his name. a major legal roadblock for google's plan to create a massive library of free books available online. a federal judge has rejected a deal between google and lawyers for authors and publishers. deal would have allowed the search engine to make money, presiding over the largest digital library. google had already scanned more than 15 million books for the project. coming up ahead, time is almost out for actress lindsay lohan to make a legal decision. we'll show you the decision she must make by the close of the

the clock is ticking for troubled actress lind slay lohan. starlet has until the end of today to tell a los angeles judge whether she will take a plea deal. the charges deal with allegations that lohan stole a $2500 necklace while on probation. now, the deal will come with some jail time. if lohan does not contact the court, the case goes to trial. with a hearing set for next month. a dog in massachusetts has a new leash on life. after a fire ripped through a duplex in february, the owner thought she had lost everything including her pup, lola. the home was boarded up. no one was allowed in. earlier this week, the homeowner went back to her old house and guess what. she heard something familiar. >> i just hear scratches at the

door and i was like what is that? we thought it would have been like a raccoon or something in the house. i started scratching on the door. i yelled her name and she started crying. we tore the door down and there she was! >> it was lola. she was skinny. she had been trapped in the house for 26 days! they took her to a vet and guess what. she's expected to be ok! >> wow. >> isn't that a lovely story? i loew that story. >> wish they went back sooner though. great ending. >> she's doing ok. lola. >> how are you? >> well, i have my umbrella ready. i just need to know how bad is it going to be? >> i don't think it is going to be too bad because it is cool here. south and west of town, temperatures in luray in the 60s, you've got a better chance of seeing the strong to severe thunderstorms we'll be watching as it comes out of the midwest a little bit later this afternoon. really this evening is when it will be the key time tracy murray for us. -- key timeframe for us.

we're struggling, 53 at 1:00. that may be wishful thinking, i think we'll be closer to 50 and struggle all afternoon to get into the mid -- maybe the upper 50s if we can turn the winds around a little bit more. late this afternoon, what you'll notice especially toward the evening, the increasing showers and then some thunderstorms by 9:00, if not earlier, some of these could be on the strong side as temperatures start to drop off. we've been watching all of this through the morning. last night, some rain showers. clouds are hanging tough. there reason some breaks well out to the south and west of washington. we've got a little area of rain. watch this also on live doppler 9000 hd. sort of zoomed in here. just about coming into frederick now as this is moving east toward westminster. leesburg, maybe another 20 minutes, light rain for you. i think it is going to last 30, 40 minutes almost back to i-81. this stuff is generally right around here. we may see this over the next couple of hours. as far as the warmth, we're

close. it will be a struggle. we're holding in the 40s still. southeast to southerly winds, the cold stuff is in maryland. but in virginia, we get into the 50s in culpepper and fredericksburg. luray, sard, those are the areas that are most concerned about for the potential for the stronger storms later this afternoon. 46 degrees with cloudy skies. feels like 42 with that south- southeasterly wind at 8 miles per hour. there is some spotty drizzle as well under the clouds. this is nothing compared to what's going none other parts of the country. a big storm out west. two to three feet of snow in the sierras. northern part of the country, nearly a foot from minneapolis to wisconsin. this storm extends into new york and pennsylvania. you'll notice little lines of showers here and there. these are showers and some thunderstorms and this is -- remember right here, ohio, kentucky, western west virginia with the severe weather threat is the greatest for this afternoon. it lessens as it approaches us. by 4:00, those showers will be moving off to our north and east. but new ones showing up now out

toward roanoke and charlottesville. west and northwest of pittsburgh. we'll go through the evening hours. 8:00 p.m. now, we're looking at a couple of hefty lines of showers and storms. one north and west, one south. this sweeps us through by 11:00. just a couple of showers left over. even into tomorrow morning, we could have a few showers to start the day. but we'll become partly sunny. today, 57. that may be a little optimistic. we'll be lucky to make 55, 54. some showers and storms tonight into tomorrow morning. tomorrow becoming partly sunny but blustery, 49. friday, chilly. 49 degrees. the weekend, even colder. a chance for wintry mix late saturday, saturday night and sunday. stick around. we'll have more 9news now at noon right after this.
